Aromas of milk chocolate, brambly raspberry, bing cherry, toasted clove and sweet cinnamon leap from the glass. The palate bursts with red fruit flavors of cherry, raspberry, red currant and pomegranate. Firm tannins and notes of vanilla, caramel and toasted coconut complement the fruit flavors. The finish lingers with notes of dried cranberry and cherry, charred sage, cocoa nibs and sweet vanilla.
This bold 2017 Old Vine Zinfandel comes from several vineyards in Lodi, Clarksburg, and Contra Costa County. A majority of the Zinfandel is sourced from old blocks of head trained vines planted in the 60’s and 80’s in the Mokelumne district of Lodi, which gives the blend brambly fruit nuances with just a touch of pepper spice. The Petite Sirah from Clarksburg, adds excellent depth to the blend with great acidity, structure and blackberry fruit notes. Tempranillo from the Manna Vineyard in Lodi adds red fruit and finesse. Finally, a pinch of Tannat from Clarksburg and Mourvèdre from Contra Costa add a touch of depth and spice respectively.
This Old Vine Zinfandel pairs perfectly with smoked brisket or a blue cheese burger topped with fig jam, alongside sweet potato fries.
