Deep purple in color, aromas lead with an elixir of blackberries, followed by sweet cherry liqueur, violets, orchid blossoms and mocha. The mouth feel is rich and complex with layers of Belgian chocolate covered blueberries, white pepper, cloves laced in an orange peel and Mexican hot chocolate. Finishing strong, flavors of blackberry fruit, caramel and vanilla coat the palate.
An excellent vintage for Dry Creek Valley, the drought paved the path for highly concentrated berry clusters as the vines were struggling at bud break. A lighter crop overall was harvested, however the fruit was balanced and had incredible ripeness. The Zinfandel was primarily sourced from a vineyard farmed by the Barba family, which added pronounced fruit flavors to the overall blend. A few other blocks within Dry Creek Valley were added along with a small amount of Napa Valley Merlot from the Nepenthes vineyard to add structure and round out the blend. The wine was aged in mostly American oak, with a touch of French oak for complexity and to soften the blend.
Outstanding pairings for this rich Zinfandel would be grilled lamb sausages covered in sautéed onions, Carne Asada with a stack of flour tortillas, or dark chocolate desserts with a bitter edge to cut through the wine.
